The Chief Operations Officer provides strategic and hands-on executive leadership across all operational functions of the firm. This role drives operational discipline, efficiency, and alignment within a fast-paced, project-centric environment.

The COO oversees accounting, human resources, marketing, business development and critical infrastructure systems, and key performance metrics to executive leadership. This position participates and monitors performance against targets and recommends
corrective actions as needed.

The COO establishes and enforces internal controls, risk management practices, and compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements. This role leads operational improvement initiatives, evaluates business systems and workflows, partners with leadership to scale operations efficiently as the firm grows and promotes a company culture that supports high performance and strong morale.

Serving as a key advisor to the CEO and Principals. The COO supports informed decisionmaking across the organization. This position ensures that business processes align with
sustainable growth, competitive pricing, and the timely delivery of profitable, high-quality engineering design services. The COO brings proven experience optimizing systems and
processes and a collaborative leadership style.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or liberal arts
  • Expertise in project management, business operations, organization development, and
    leadership.
  • Master’s degree in related field preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive operations experience and/or organizational leadership.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in a senior leadership or executive role within a
    growth-oriented organization.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across
    teams and with clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Industry experience in consulting within engineering design, construction management
    or another project-based professional services firm.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and ability
    to pass a background check.

 

Expectations

  • Partners with the CEO and Principals to shape financial strategy, annual planning and
    long-term growth objectives, translating business strategy into actionable operational
    plans across all departments.
  • Evaluates business opportunities, including service-line expansion, geographic growth,
    joint venture partnerships and selective acquisitions
  • Monitors critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including net revenue, labor
    utilization rate, net labor multiplier, work in progress, accounts receivable aging,
    backlog health, overhead rate, indirect labor and project gross margin
  • Provides strategic insight into firm-wide department-level performance
  • Leads regular operational meetings focused on project status, risk management and
    resource allocation
  • Collaborates with Human Resources on talent acquisition, development, performance management, skills mapping, employee relations and training needs
  • Leads the development and refinement of standard operating procedures and
    automations to improve workflows, streamline processes and enhance internal
    communication
  • Reviews vendor agreements for acceptable fee terms, payment provisions, retainage,
    indemnity and limitation of liability.
  • Ensures and maintains adequate insurance coverage, including professional liability,
    cyber and general liability
  • Oversees timely filing and management of corporate registrations, certifications and
    operational documentation
  • Administers and optimizes Employee Resource Planning Software.

What You Will Do:

Support Technical Excellence 

  • Contribute to the design and development of HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial and institutional facilities. 
  • Perform load calculations and apply engineering principles to support system design.

This role is responsible for managing the full-cycle recruitment process, including sourcing candidates, coordinating interviews, extending offers, and supporting onboarding activities ensuring positive candidate experience. The position works closely with department leaders to identify staffing needs and develop effective recruiting strategies to attract and retain top talent. Essential Functions:

  • Prepare agendas, presentations, reports, and correspondence for executive meetings. 
  • Serve as a liaison between the executive and internal/external stakeholders. 
  • Track deadlines, action items, and ongoing projects to ensure timely execution. 
  • Handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. 
  • Organize meetings, events, and executive engagements from planning through completion. 
  • Screen communications and determine priorities while exercising sound judgment. 
  • Support special projects and operational initiatives as assigned. 
  • Anticipate executive needs and proactively identify solutions before issues arise.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education 

  • No Degree Requirements 

Candidate Qualifications 

  • 4+ years of experience supporting C-level executives, preferably a CEO. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Professional demeanor with excellent interpersonal skills and executive presence. 
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in sensitive situations.

Working Conditions

General office and sedentary, requiring extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Ability to exert a light degree of physical effort including carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking and the assisted lifting of objects and materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and distance vision. Limited exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, and vibrations.
